This is distressing, but not too surprising…
According to some studies, the fairly new “biodegradable plastics” (cornstarch-based) may be worse for the environment than their non-biodegradable ancestors. (Thanks to Green Bean for the link!)
Check out the article linked above–the basic gist is that these plastics give off more methane and carbon dioxide than other biodegrading and thus contribute to greenhouse gases even more. I’m not sure that really counts, because decomposition of any kind does this, but even so it may make the tradeoff a wash in the end.
Interesting, though, how the article lists all these potential solutions…but the one it doesn’t list is “Hey y’all, maybe let’s not use so many disposable plastics, huh?”
