They have a First Amendment right to lie about their products? REALLY?
Anyone who’s interested in food safety, how what we eat gets to us, and the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that results in our current food system definitely might want to bookmark Marion Nestle’s Food Politics blog. Very sharp woman.
Her latest post comments on the latest volley fired by the marketers of processed food, claiming they have the right under the First Amendment (you know, “freedom of speech”?) to say whatever they want to on the front of their boxes. Like last winter when Cocoa Krispies were touted as being great for helping your kids not get the flu. Stuff like that. Very good arguments–but I find it amazing that these are arguments that even need to happen. At some point, don’t we just have to say, “WHOA, that’s totally not what freedom of speech is about!”?
