Another reason not to eat beef and pork…

Over at Eat Drink Better there’s an article giving me another reason not to eat beef…

Food Recall: E. Coli-Tainted Beef

At least 19 people in 16 states have gotten sick from E. coli-contaminated beef, and the company that produced these steaks is issuing a recall.

Here’s the deal–I’d never heard of this before, but it makes sense: when meat is tenderized, it’s poked with tiny needles, which means there’s a greater risk of contaminants getting into the meat.  Therefore it’s designated as a higher risk kind of meat, and yet it undergoes no more rigorous testing than “intact” meat. (Check out Marion Nestle’s article on the topic…)

Meat in general is just getting scarier and scarier.  I like it–I don’t particularly want to be a vegetarian.  But it’s just getting so bloody (no pun intended) freaky, all the stories about how abysmally our foodstuffs are treated before they get to us…

And then there’s this article:

With Corn Prices Rising, Pigs Switch To Fatty Snacks

On the Menus: Trail Mix, Cheese Curls, Tater Tots; Farmer Jones’s Ethanol Fix

Wow.  I mean, wow.  Corn is too expensive, so they feed the animals cheese curls and Ho-Ho’s? Wow.

  1. ack. scary stuff!!

Whenever I think of beef in the states I think of ‘blood’, mostly because Americans tend to eat their meat more ‘rare’ than most Canadians do… there are different regulations in Canadian restaurants about how ‘rare’ you’re allowed to cook steak…

needless to say, we try not to eat a lot of meat here… but we’re having slow-cooked roast beef tonight… :S
